Summer or Winter, rain or shine, Derbyshire is full of wonderful places to visit for a day out, long weekend or even a holiday. From the beautiful Peak District National Park to tourist attractions like the heights of Abraham, Gulliver’s Kingdom and grand stately homes. With the endless amounts of attractions in Derbyshire, it can be hard to choose where to go, so we’ve put together a list of our favourite attractions around Derbyshire.
- Heights of Abraham
If you’re looking for something unique to do, then why not enjoy spectacular views of the peak district while taking flight on Britain’s first alpine cable car. Heights of Abraham have been a popular attraction to visit for people of all ages for many years, it is situation amongst 60 incredible acres to explore. Once you’ve enjoyed seeing the mesmerising views and exploring the area, there are a number of excellent restaurants and café to relax and enjoy some well-deserved food.
What’s even better is that your cable car ticket gives you free access to all the attractions and exhibitions at the summit which includes two famous caverns: The Great Masson Cavern and the Rutland Cavern & Nestus Mine – so you’ll be able to enjoy a whole day of fun activities.

- Gulliver’s Kingdom
Located in Matlock Bath, Gulliver’s Kingdom is a family-run theme park that has over 65 rides, attractions and shows which guarantee’s a great day our for the whole family. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor attractions based in different areas across the park. The park is located on a steep hill, but the chairlift is the perfect way to get from the bottom of the park to the top.
At the park you can take a ride on the giant waterslide or Dino Falls in Lost World, where you’ll sit in a rubber raft and slide down to the bottom at great speeds. Once you’ve enjoyed the rides you can head over to Crow’s Nest Quest in Smugglers Cove where you’ll embark on an aerial adventure, strapped to a harness you can make your way around the adventure course. If you’re looking for some less adrenaline packed activities, then head over to the JCB Zone where you can enjoy construction themed activities – you’ll even get the chance to operate one of their famous iconic yellow diggers.
Prices: Prices differ depending on if you buy them online or at the gate. On the gate, tickets cost £21 for both adults and children. Online tickets cost £15 for both adults and children. Children under 90cm go free and there are discounted ticket prices for seniors and concessionary.
- Peak Cavern
Peak Cavern, also known as Devil’s Arse, is one of the four show caves in Castleton, Derbyshire. Peak Cavern’s entrance is deep in the gorge below the ruins of Peveril Castle, it is the largest natural cave entrance in Britain.
Peak Cavern is the largest cave system in the Peak District and is almost all natural. Up until early 20th century the cave was inhibited by ropemaking cave dwellers – you can see still remains of an ancient village, where up to 40 families used to live for more than 400 years. Ropes were made in the enormous mouth of the cave and you can see a demonstration of how ropes were made on a visit to the caves. There are also guided tour around the cavern which last around an hour, you’ll see unique rock formations, hear the sounds of running water and echoes as you explore the cave further.
Prices: Adult admission into the cave is £9.50, and for children and teenagers, the price ranges from £5.50 to £7.50.
- Chatsworth House
The UK is known for its collection of magnificent, grand stately homes and Derbyshire is not short of them. These historic buildings are the perfect place to immerse yourself in history, be in awe of the breath-taking architecture and explore the beautiful gardens.
Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth House, is definitely a must-see. With over 30 rooms filled with one of Europe’s best art collections, there are works of arts that span 4000 years, from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculpture to modern masterpieces from Lucian Freud and David Nash. There are also over 105 acres of garden to explore, at every twist and turn there is something beautiful to see, with stunning water features, a huge maze and lots of plants. There is also a farmyard where children can enjoy demonstrations of cow milking, animal handling, chick hatching and other fun farm related activities. The perfect day for everyone in your family.
Prices: An adult ticket is £19, and a child ticket is £13.
- Alton Towers
Although Alton Towers is just over the border in Staffordshire, we couldn’t miss out including one of the UK’s best theme parks in the UK. With over 40 rides and attractions located all over the park - Alton Towers is perfect for the whole family. There are areas like CBeebies Land for small children and plenty of rides like Oblivion and Rita for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Even if you’re not a fan of big rides, there are plenty of other things to do including a hilarious hideous journey through the dungeons where you’ll explore Staffordshire’s darkest history, or you can enjoy the beautiful gardens - the perfect spot for a picnic on a lovely summer’s day. There are plenty of fantastic restaurants to visit if you don’t fancy a picnic like the Rollercoaster Restaurant, where your food is delivered to the table via a rollercoaster track.
