Planning a trip to Wimbledon – our top tips!

Planning a trip to Wimbledon – our top tips!

Whether you’re lucky enough to have secured tickets through the 2020 ballot, or you’re planning to queue up on the day for tickets – Wimbledon is undoubtedly one of the most exciting UK sporting events for the whole family to enjoy. The tournament offers a brilliant way to watch some of the best athletes in the world, and after a year away thanks to the pandemic, we’re certainly ready to head back. Read on as Coach Hire Comparison guide you through everything you need to know for a glorious day out.

What do I wear?

If you’re heading to the Royal Box, there are very strict rules on what’s acceptable – but for general admission you’re free to dress as you please.

As always with England, it does well to be prepared for any weather. Closer to the time, keep an eye on the weather and if all else fails make sure to pack your sun hat but also your umbrella! We’d recommend wearing comfortable footwear too as the Grounds are large and hilly.

Remember though, you’re only permitted to bring in one bag per person. Pack everything you need in a bag measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 30cm. Excess bags can be stored in left luggage outside the Grounds.

What can I eat?

While there are lots of fantastic food options there, from stalls to high-end restaurants – we’re big fans of bringing a picnic. That way, you’ll have exactly what you want, and it’ll also be much cheaper… Result! Pork pies, sausage rolls, prosecco, sandwiches, scotch eggs and, obviously, strawberries – it is Wimbledon after all! You’re free to bring pretty much any food or drink into the grounds, but not bottles of spirits.

Don’t forget your reusable water bottle. There are over 100 refill points for you to use and keep hydrated on what will (hopefully!) be a lovely summers’ day.

Is there anything I need to know about watching tennis?

If you’re the uninitiated, here’s some top tips for being a top tennis spectator:

  • Switch your phone or tablet to silent. Trust us, you don’t want to be the person who distracts the players and gets a telling off.
  • You’re only allowed to enter or leave a court when they change ends or between matches. Don’t even think about moving during a tie-break.
  • Wimbledon tells you not to make any noise during a rally, though people do all the time. What’s a match without a few gasps added in?
  • Applaud the players. And, although you might be happy that a player messes up and hits the net or gets a double fault (when they hit the net twice during a serve!) don’t clap, it’s rude.

How do I get there?

Allow plenty of time when heading there, local public transport and roads will be very busy. The Grounds open at 10am and play begins at 11am on outside courts.

If you’re heading there in a big group or plan on having a drink or two, hiring a coach or minibus is a great option. You won’t have to worry about where to park or who’s the designated driver, you’ll get picked up and dropped off for a fun day at the Championships.

At Coach Hire Comparison, we’ve been organising fun days out with reliable mini-bus and coach suppliers for years. Get in touch to get your fast and free quote with us.

Quick top-tips!

  • Wimbledon is now a cashless Grounds, so make sure you’re equipped to flash the plastic.
  • If you need to temporarily leave the Grounds at any point during your day you will need a pass-out wristband, these are available at Gates 5 and 13 only.
  • You can find free Wi-Fi on Aorangi Terrace (The Hill) and along the east side of the Grounds including the No.1 Court Food Village and Tea Lawn.
  • Smoking (including vaping) is not allowed on courts, in buildings, in a queue and on Aorangi Terrace (the Hill).
